About Lucy West

Hello, I’m Lucy. I’m a full stack design practitioner with 15 years experience spanning the design spectrum across agencies, consultancies and organisations. I’ve helped launch new products and services for some of Australia’s most recognised companies across many industries (Telco, Automotive, Education, Insurance, Banking, Retail, Tech, Energy and Government).

Through my work and positive attitude, I demonstrate to stakeholders that caring for customers leads to better business with positive impact. I do this through human centred design, research and strategy which translates complex business problems into easy-to-use design solutions.

I was one of the first designers to publish on the intersection of design ethics and speculative design in early 2018, and continue to research, publish and exhibit on the topic. Most recently, I exhibited for Melbourne Design Week exploring the role of ethics through speculative design. My current research projects use interactive video and sound to provoke insights and gather data to regenerate ideas.

I teach postgraduate students at RMIT and mentor female primary school students to support growth and engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers.

I also spend a lot of time in the water, usually from falling off my stand-up paddle board.

About Design Ethics

As designers, we shape the world around us. I believe we have an imperative to take a good look at ethics however impenetrable it might seem.

DesignEthics.com.au aims to help designers bring ethics into their practices. By identifying where their ethical boundaries lie, I believe designers can turn their values into actions they feel good about.

Through a series of ethical experiments leveraging speculative design, I am testing and learning what ethics mean for design practice.
